Tara Towers Hotel near the RDS Royal Dublin Society
The RDS was given its name in 1820. It was formally known as the Dublin Society and was established in 1731 to promote and develop agriculture, arts, industry and science in Ireland. Located in Ballsbridge, the RDS has many Exhibition Halls and is a venue for many different events throughout the year.
Each year the RDS is home to the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, a school science competition with entries from across Ireland. Another annual event the Dublin Horse Show, was first held in 1868, this high profile International show draws people from around the world both spectators and competitors and is a great family fun day out. The RDS is also the home to Leinster Rugby, and home games for the Rabo Direct PRO12 and the Heineken Cup and pre season games are placed here. Over the years many concerts have taken place in the grounds of the RDS, such as Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Shania Twain and the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1988 was hosted from the Simmonscourt Pavilion. The RDS also plays host to University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin exams.
